Stimulating collagen with medical needling

Medical needling is the best way to induce collagen formation and is particularly useful for scars and facial rejuvenation. Medical needling improves the texture and complexion of the skin. It involves mechanical injury to the collagen, using very fine needles on a rolling wheel. This achieves tighter, smoother skin over the next 3-6 months as the new collagen begins to form.

Medical needling is the best and safest method of collagen induction however, the downtime can be substantial. The facial rejuvenation achieved with medical needling is more noticeable when compared to the minimal results seen with no-downtime lasers and IPL.

  • The procedure involves light sedation, so it is recommended to have someone pick you up after the procedure.
  • You will need one week off work and special Vitamin A and C oil must be applied regularly.
  • The best results are seen after six months to one year.

TIME REQUIRED: 1 HOUR

What is medical needling or Roll CIT?

I

t involves passing a needle rolling hand piece over the skin. The needles penetrate into the second layer of the skin, where it damages the old collagen and triggers the production of new collagen.

How does it work to induce collagen?

The mechanical damage triggered by the needling creates thousands of miniature skin wounds through which vitamin A and C oils can pass and further assist the collagen induction created by the inflammatory process. The new collagen is formed over 90 days and the results then continue to improve over the next year.

When is Medical needling used?

Medical needling is used for facial rejuvenation to improve the texture, tone/tightness and complexion and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars. It is particularly useful for acne scarring and sun damaged skin.

Where can it be used?

Roll-CIT can be used over any part of the body except for under the eyes.

What does the procedure involve?

Patients need to apply a Vitamin A cream for 2-4 weeks prior to the treatment to assist with the healing process and collagen induction. A light sedation will be administered. The area to be treated will then be numbed with local anaesthetic. A needle rolling hand piece is then passed over the skin until the desired effect is achieved. Vitamin A and C oil will again be applied to the treated area at the completion of the needling

What can I expect after a treatment session?

You will look bruised, red and swollen after the procedure. Scabs will form the next day which may take up to 2 weeks to fall off. You must not pick at these scabs.

For the next 7 days:

  • You will be unable to go to work.
  • You will be required to use Vitamin A and C oil 6 times a day.
  • You will need to take antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

Will I see the results immediately?

No. The new collagen is formed over 90 days and the results will continue to improve over the next year. You will begin to see results at three months but the best results are typically noticed from one year after treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people only require one treatment but it can be repeated on a yearly basis especially if scarring is severe.

Are there any side effects?

Unlike laser resurfacing there is no risk of scarring or changes in pigmentation. Therefore medical needling can be used in Asian and dark skin.
